World Premiere: January 9th & 10th, 2009, 8 p.m.

Written and conducted by Sharon Bridgforth, delta dandi is a living cacophony of monologues, chants, choral tellings, blood memories, dance and song. Through glimpses of the transmigration of one spirit’s many lives, delta dandi asks: How does collective grief and trauma inform the Black-American experience, and what must a soul do to heal? A re-imagining of the tradition of sacred concerts and tone poems that jazz icons Duke Ellington and Mary Lou Williams innovated, delta dandi is ritual theatre conjuring transformation and love.

Sharon Bridgforth, two time Alpert Award Nominee, is a recipient of the 2008 Alpert/Hedgebrook Residency Prize. Her piece delta dandi is an NPN Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by Women & Their Work and The Center on Halsted with a grant from the National Performance Network. The cast of ten includes: Baraka de Soleil winner of the prestigious Katherine Dunham Choreography/AUDELCO for excellence in Black Theatre; Sonja Perryman who played Ollita in the Off-Broadway smash hit 'Celia' about the life and music of the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz; Florinda Bryant who directed and performed in Stamp Lab's award winning Artspark Festival 2008 play, "HUSH"; and Helga Davis, co-star of "The Temptation of St. Anthony", directed by Robert Wilson with libretto and score by Bernice Johnson Reagon. Helga is currently starring in "The Blue Planet", a multi-media theater piece written by Peter Greenaway and directed by Saskia Boddeke.

The NBA Development League is the NBA's official minor league, and the first-ever basketball league with direct affiliations to NBA teams. Having recently completed its seventh season, the NBA D-League’s goals are to provide affordable, NBA-caliber entertainment to fans of its 16 teams, as well as continue to develop players, coaches, referees and front-office personnel for the NBA. As the single source for in-season player "call-ups" to the NBA, fans of the D-League enjoy the highest caliber of basketball played outside the NBA. In fact 15 percent of players on 2008 end-of-season NBA rosters spent time honing their skills in the League. In addition, it has produced current NBA coaches and 25 percent of the NBA’s referees.

The 2009 Austin Boat Show comes to the Austin Convention Center in downtown Austin on January 15-18, featuring over 600 different types of watercraft spanning 250,000 sq. ft. Set in the heart of the annual boat-buying season, will include cruisers, sailboats, fishing boats, wakeboard boats, ski boats, runabouts and personal watercraft. More than 10,000 visitors are expected to this year’s event, which will include Boater Education Classes and more activities than ever before specifically for children. January 15th, 2009 - City of Austin Employees Art Exhibit Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony

120 City of Austin employees, retired employees, and family members of employees have entered 240 works of art into the sixth annual National Arts Program in Austin. Opening reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, January 15, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Artwork will be judged by local professional artists, and city officials will be presenting the cash awards and scholarships to artists in amateur, intermediate, and professional adult levels, and in youth under 12 and youth 12-18 categories.

The Austin exhibition is sponsored by The National Arts Program Foundation, VSA arts of Texas, and the City of Austin.

Fight Pancreatic Cancer in the Austin Half and related 5K

Austin, Texas - The Pancreatica Running and Walking Team is seeking participants to join the fight against pancreatic cancer at the Austin Half Marathon on Sunday, February 15, 2009. For those who choose a shorter course there is a related 5K run / walk in the area.

Participants will receive training, a special athletic shirt, fundraising strategies, support & encouragement, prizes, and more! Fundraising efforts will benefit the non-profit Lorenzen Cancer Foundation, an organization whose mission is to raise awareness, increase education and support pancreatic cancer research.

January 15th, 2009 - Leslee Fraser : No Sure Footing Opening Reception

Sifting through found objects, natural and political history, religious iconography and suburban kitsch as source materials, Leslee Fraser creates small-scale ceramic figure assemblages that draw the viewer in for a closer look. From this intimate vantage point, Fraser’s repurposed figurine tableaux offer darkly humorous allegories reflecting life’s absurd realities. Suburban malls, the Bible, scientific theory and domestic talismans all provide ripe fodder for Fraser’s miniature parables as she assembles familiar tokens into vignettes both tender and thoroughly skewed. To get up close and personal with Fraser’s tiny bricolage is to be reminded that sometimes the cutest fragments of life’s detritus can pack the darkest punchlines.

Leslee Fraser earned her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has exhibited work throughout the United States, including NFA Space in Chicago and Blue Star Art Space in San Antonio. She was a co-founder and curator at The Bower art gallery in San Antonio, an artist-run exhibition space devoted to experimental and conceptual art; she also served as Biography and Bibliography editor at San Antonio’s ArtPace foundation.

This standup comedy troupe provides a new perspective to the Middle East conflict. Founded by Charley Warady, an Israeli, and Ray Hanania, a Palestinian, the group also includes veteran standup comedians Aaron Freeman and Yisrael Campbell. They spin jokes from both sides of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and in America, are working to dispel prevailing stereotypes of both Israelis and Palestinians.
