Jerusalem -- Hours after a fragile cease-fire was
announced, the Israelis and the Palestinians appear to be honoring
the truce. The army says there was one isolated exchange of
gunshots, but no one was hurt. Israel's prime minister says he
hopes the violence that claimed 51 lives is over.
Boston -- Some 60 million people are expected to tune
in tonight for the first of three debates between Al Gore and
George W. Bush. After a weekend of rehearsals, the two presidential
candidates are planning to take it easy Tuesday, before their verbal
confrontation in Boston.
Washington -- George W. Bush will be trying to convince
Americans he's ready to run the country, when he meets Al Gore in
Tuesday night's debate. In a new CBS-New York Times survey, Gore came
out way ahead when people were asked who is better prepared for the
White House.
Capitol Hill -- The House has passed a bill that would force
people charged with rape to submit to HIV tests if the accuser
asks for one. It also approved a measure making it illegal to send
pornography to 16- and 17-year-olds. Both bills face uncertain
fates in the Senate.
Washington -- The Federal Reserve looks at interest rates
again Tuesday, but analysts expect the Fed to leave things as they
are. They say there's mounting evidence that prior rate hikes have
slowed the economy down enough that inflation, except for energy
costs, isn't worrisome.
