First Warning Weather System

LIVE DUAL DOPPLER RADAR

Live Dual Doppler Radar is KXAN's latest technological advance in severe weather coverage. We've added another live doppler radar, making KXAN's radar coverage second to none. Our new doppler radar is located near Llano -- the first weather radar ever in the Hill Country.

The location of the radar provides the KXAN First Warning Weather team the best view of storms over the Austin area. Since most storms approach from the west, our new Hill Country doppler radar will allow early warning of dangerous weather conditions. KXAN Dual Doppler Radar gives Central Texans unmatched live radar coverage.

Another local station now claims to have "triple doppler," when actually, they only link radars owned by television stations in Dallas and Houston to their website. Only KXAN has two doppler radars, located right here in Central Texas, covering the weather where we live.

KXAN VIPIR

VIPIR (Volumetric Imaging and Processing of Integrated Radar) shows you storms in 3D, giving you a detailed look at each layer of the storm and showing you developing tornadoes first.

KXAN FIRST WARNING FUTURE FORECAST

Our advanced computer modeling system can even forecast where severe weather and tornadoes may occur two days in advance so you can be prepared.

KXAN LIVE DOPPLER RADAR

With LIVE DOPPLER RADAR, the KXAN NEWS 36 First Warning Weather team can show you severe weather without delay. Combined with NEXRAD DOPPLER RADAR, we can punch through the heaviest storms to spot damaging winds, tornadoes and hail, as they develop, to give you early warning.

KXAN NEXRAD DOPPLER RADAR

KXAN NEXRAD DOPPLER RADAR is the worlds most sophisticated weather radar. It can detect damaging winds and large hail in thunderstorms. Nexrad radar can detect tornadoes developing up to 20 minutes or more before they touch down.

KXAN STORM PATH ANALYZER

When severe weather threatens, every minute counts. The KXAN Storm Path Analyzer is the best way to stay ahead of the storm. With a list of cities in the storm's path and an estimated time of arrival, you'll be prepared.

KXAN NEIGHBORHOOD MAPS

Weather can change neighborhood to neighborhood. That's why the KXAN News 36 street level maps will help you know when severe weather threatens your community, showing you storms developing over city blocks and streets throughout Central Texas.

Big changes are ahead in Central Texas weather. Rain and colder weather are likely by Friday, and may linger into the weekend. The front we've been expecting late today has slowed, and it now appears moisture from the Gulf and Tropical Storm Keith will have time to reach our area before the front arrives, allowing for much higher rain chances. Weak low pressure aloft could continue to bring cloudy skies and some light rain Saturday. Temperatures will drop dramatically with the frontal passage Friday morning, and remain quite cool through the weekend. The latest on intensifying Tropical Storm Keith can be found at the National Hurricane Center's Web site.
